A striking mid-century Swedish painting by Bengt Crantz (1916–2001), depicting a rugged coastal or harbour landscape in a wonderfully restrained palette of charcoal, slate blue, ochre, terracotta and muted green.
The composition is beautifully simplified, with the boats, buildings and distant landscape reduced to bold, almost abstract shapes. There’s a lovely quiet, graphic quality to the painting, while the visible brushwork gives the surface plenty of texture and movement.
Crantz was a largely self-taught Swedish painter whose work encompassed landscapes, still lifes and figurative subjects. He is represented in Swedish museum collections, including the Nationalmuseum.
