City Rhythms-Original Mid-Century Cityscape
A small mid-century cityscape in oil, full of character and energy. Bold, expressive brushstrokes capture a busy street scene, with colourful buildings, a distinctive tower and figures moving through the foreground. The palette of vivid blues, warm ochres, reds and deep charcoal gives the composition real presence, while the loose, almost abstract treatment lends it a wonderfully individual quality.
A characterful little painting, beautifully housed in a chunky, layered wooden frame.
Artist- Wilhelm Henning ( 1899-1955)
Oil on board
Measures 37 × 31 cm
Good vintage condition
Henning studied at the Konstakademien (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in Stockholm in 1921 and 1922, at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He undertook study trips to North and South America and heinitially worked as a sculptor and had his first solo exhibition at Fortuna Konsthandel in Stockholm around 1922. He exhibited in group exhibitions, including those of the Sveriges Allmänna Konstförening (General Association of Arts of Sweden) at the Liljevalch Art Gallery in Stockholm. Henning only began exhibiting his paintings in 1940. He is best known for his painted street scenes of his hometown of Gothenburg, often on a small scale, as well as for his nature scenes and abstract compositions.
